Ideas on a Party for Children Who Have Been Adopted
Bringing home a new addition to your family is an exciting prospect. When you adopt a child into your home, it's important to make the child feel welcome and feel like part of the family. One way to accomplish that feeling is by throwing the child or children a special adoption party. Host a small party, to give the child time to adjust to the new people around. Celebrate bringing home your new children. Does this Spark an idea?

Family Tree Party
-
Use a large piece of posterboard or a white sheet and sketch out a drawing of a large tree on it. Place a jar of finger paint nearby or use several different colors of paint. Encourage everyone at the party to leave behind a fingerprint with the paint and write their name, adding the fingerprints to each of the branches on the tree. Show the children how to put their own fingerprints on the tree and remind them that they're officially part of your family.
Meet and Greet
-
Host a simple meet and greet, where the children have the chance to meet other members of your family, including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. This is especially important if the children haven't met the family yet or if they're still uncomfortable around new people. A meet-and-greet party is best for older children, as meeting new people might be scary for younger kids. Ask those in attendance to share a special message for the children or to share a story about their new parents when they were young kids.

Family Addition
-
Gather as many family photographs as possible, including pictures of the parents, grandparents and any siblings. String pieces of rope or twine from trees in the yard or hang directly on the walls, if you're hosting and indoor party. Arrange the images from the rope, hanging the pictures with a wooden clothespin. Take multiple photos of the children during the party and make it a major event to hang the new pictures on the strings. It shows the children that they're now part of your heritage.
Personalize It
-
For younger children, turn the adoption party into a birthday-style party. Display a welcome-to-the-family cake in the center of the table, and arrange cookies or cupcakes with their initials on the treats. Ask each guest to bring some type of gift for the child. Towards the middle of the party, officially welcome the child into your home and treat her to her presents.
