Onesie Baby Shower Cake Ideas

Novice bakers can make a professional-looking onesie cake for a baby shower in just a few hours. For a baby shower with a clothesline theme, make a coordinating multi-tiered cake, decorated with miniature onesies made from fondant. Instead of a traditional cake, make onesie-shaped cupcakes and serve them together on a plastic or metallic cake tray. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Fondant Onesie Cake

    • Prepare a round or rectangular cake, spread a layer of butter cream icing on the cake and smooth out the icing over the top and sides. Roll out a package of fondant. Trace a onesie onto a piece of paper, cut out the tracing and place it on top of the fondant. Use a sharp knife to cut around the paper and place the fondant cut out on the center of the cake. Fill a pastry bag that has a round icing tip with icing in a coordinating color and outline the onesie's neckline and bottom flap. Roll out more fondant and cut out onesies with a onesie cookie cutter. Line the cutouts around the sides of the entire cake.

    • Make a slab cake and cut off any rounded top with a serrated knife. Trace the outline of a onesie on a piece of paper and cut out the tracing. Place the cutout on the cake and cut around it with a serrated knife. Roll out a package of fondant to approximately 1/8-inch. Carefully place the fondant on the cake and smooth it out with a fondant smoother. Cut out another small piece of fondant to make the bottom flap of the diaper shirt. Roll out one or two more packages of fondant and cut out baby shapes with different cookie cutters. Place the cutouts on the cake.

    Onesie Clothesline Cake

    • Make two, 10-inch round cakes and two, 8-inch round cakes and cut off any rounded tops. Spread a layer of butter cream icing on the top of both of the 10-inch cakes and one 8-inch cake. Stack the cakes on top of one another. Spread a layer of butter cream icing over the entire cake and make the icing as smooth as possible. Fill a pastry bag that has a round icing tip with icing and draw a clothesline near the top of each cake layer. Roll out two or three packages of different colored fondant. Use a onesie cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Arrange the cutouts on the cake so they look like they are suspended from the clotheslines. Place the remaining cutouts on top of the cake.

    Onesie Cupcake Cake

    • Purchase or make two rectangular slab cakes. Make sure the tops of the cakes are flat. Use a onesie cookie cutter to cut shapes from one of the cakes. Spread a layer of smooth icing over the top and the sides of the other cake. Roll out a sheet of fondant and cut out rectangles large enough to cover each of the onesie cake cutouts. Smooth the fondant onto the cakes. Alternatively, spread a smooth layer of icing on each of the onesie cutouts. Place the cutouts on top of the iced slab cake and decorate the edges of the cake with pacifier candies.
