Burning Man Art Grants

Held each year in the Nevada desert as "a radical experiment in temporary community," the Burning Man experience and event unfolds as an interactive festival of creativity whose form and fascinations are determined entirely by participants. The organizers point out that you have to be there to adequately understand it. Beginning as a small gathering of people at its inception in 1986, Burning Man has grown to attract nearly 50,000 participants during some years in the first decade of the 21st century.

  1. Arts Grants

    • Burning Man funds between 30 and 40 arts grants annually. Most grants range from a few thousand dollars up to a maximum of $20,000, although the higher amounts are rare. Any partially-funded work must be brought to the attention of the grants committee in the proposal. Payment schedules for grants depend on amount of funding, the individual artist, and the scope of the artwork. All artists receiving grants must sign a contract prior to payment.

    Application

    • The main criteria for winning an arts grant is simply whether the Burning Man committee awarding the funds likes the proposal. To increase the chances of them liking the proposal, be thorough in the application. Include drawings, budget information, and a schedule for construction. Proposals should be sent to Burning Man through its PDF form. All proposals must be submitted by February 1 each year, with absolutely no exceptions. Only send one version of the proposal, as multiple versions will not be considered.

    Criteria

    • Burning Man prefers proposals for interactive art, whether or not it relates to the Burning Man theme of radical self-sufficiency. Mobile art, as long as it has nothing to do with an automobile, may also receive funding. Burning Man wants proposals for art that generates reaction, involving visitors in the process. Interactivity can be achieved in an almost endless variety of ways, and the Burning Man organizers admit that it's one of those things they recognize when they see it.

    Ineligible Projects

    • Burning Man does not fund any performing arts, theme camps, "mutant vehicles," stages, tents or any other artistically-decorated temporary living sites, or anything illegal. They don't fund anything resembling a motor vehicle, period, whether it moves or not.
