What Items Are Needed for a Newborn Infant Baby?

Bringing home a new baby is a momentous occasion. It marks the beginning of a new family, a new life and a new lifestyle. If you want to keep your baby healthy and safe, there are quite a few supplies that need to be picked up before the baby arrives. While you will likely never run out of baby products to purchase, you can get by with a few basic supplies.

  1. Clothing

    • Your baby will need several onesies to help keep her warm and comfortable. Look to buy at least five of these so that you always have a clean one available after a spit-up or diaper incident. You should also grab a few baby sleepers, several pairs of baby socks and a few baby hats. Baby shoes, mittens and pajamas are also helpful items to have around. You will also need some warm blankets.

    Equipment

    • Your baby is going to need a place to eat, sleep and play. You will need a playpen for playtime and a crib for sleeping. You will eventually need a high chair for feeding time, so it may be best to pick one up while you are shopping. Make sure your crib mattress is moisture resistant and that your baby cannot accidentally climb over the rails. A changing table is not a necessity but will dramatically increase the ease with which you attend to diaper issues.

    Bath Items

    • Your baby is going to need lots of diapers. Buy at least three packs of disposable diapers or enough cloth diapers to get you through a few days. You will need a trash can for soiled diapers, some baby wipes, gentle washcloths, baby-safe soap and shampoo, and a thermometer. You should also pick up a small bathtub (that would fit in your sink or in your regular-sized bathtub) in which you can bathe your newborn baby.

    Food

    • Your baby will likely be nursing when he comes home from the hospital, but you should be prepared for the feedings to come. Baby formula, bottles, nipples, disposable milk bags and some basic baby food products should be ready to go. You should also invest in a few burp cloths, unless you aren't too attached to your current shirts or sweaters. Mothers who breastfeed may find a breastfeeding pillow to be a big help in their daily routines with their babies.
