OB/GYNs assist women during pregnancy and have expertise in female reproduction.

An OB/GYN is a medical doctor, formally known as an obstetrician and gynecologist. OB/GYNs are experts in pregnancy, the female reproductive system and issues of concern to women's health, such as breast and ovarian cancer. Preparing to become an OB/GYN includes taking classes in biology, chemistry and pathology. Prospective OB/GYNs must have a high school diploma, a bachelor's degree and a higher degree in medicine. They must also successfully complete the medical board examinations in at least one state. High school students who wish to become OB/GYNs should complete all requirements for the high school diploma.

  1. Core Courses

    • You need a high school diploma so that you can be admitted to a bachelor's program in a four-year institution and begin your quest to become an OB/GYN. Every state has different requirements to obtain a high school diploma. In general, you must successfully complete coursework in the following areas: mathematics, science, social studies, English, fine arts, physical education and health. Consult your guidance counselor to find out the exact requirements and enroll in the required courses during your years in high school. In addition, be sure to enroll in the following core courses: algebra, geometry, biology, chemistry, physics. These courses give basic knowledge of math and science, which builds a good foundation for college-level science courses. In addition, English writing and communication courses will prepare you for writing reports and communicating with patients and medical staff.

    Elective Courses

    • All high schools offer additional courses that are not mandatory for students. You may wish to enroll in the following elective courses: trigonometry, calculus, advanced algebra, advanced chemistry or any Advanced Placement courses offered at your high school in the biological sciences or in chemistry. These courses help you develop scientific methods and laboratory research skills, which are fundamental for medical doctors, including OB/GYNs. Additionally, knowledge of a foreign language can be helpful in an urban gynecology practice, as many patients may speak a foreign language.

    Summer Programs

    • Some colleges and universities offer summer programs in the sciences for high school students who wish to pursue careers in the biological sciences or in medicine (see Resources). Enroll in those programs to get additional experience and skills that will assist you in your goal to become an OB/GYN. Some programs also offer similar courses over a period of several weekends during the school year.

    Career Counseling

    • All high schools in the U.S. have guidance and counseling personnel. Though this is not a course, it is an important aspect of high school life. Ask your guidance counselor to assist you in enrolling in courses that will help you reach your goal of becoming an OB/GYN. Create a plan of study for all four years of high school.
