The Parts of Speech and Sentence Builders for First Grade
The language arts are typically divided into the categories of literature and language. Focusing on language skills, this area of study is broken into five strands: reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Specific skills make up each of these levels and provide a basis for instructing pupils. A primary skill in the language arts is mastering the parts of speech. One way to reinforce pupils' understanding of the parts of speech is sentence building, requiring pupils to create sentences from pieces.

Sentence Builders
-
Providing pupils, especially those of primary age, with sentence supports and pieces to help them develop their ability to create sentences. Sentence builders offer pupils either a beginning piece of a sentence upon which they can build or parts to arrange to create a complete sentence. Necessary parts needed for sentence building in first grade include the basic parts of speech, giving pupils a noun and verb and requiring them to supply other essential items and arrange the words appropriately. Giving pupils sentence builders provides them with a base on which to build and enables them to begin writing sentences in a non-intimidating way.
