New Jersey Grants for Green Building Design
New Jersey has implemented a number of initiatives to encourage the development of greener building practices in the state. Many of these incentives relate specifically to green building design, and include a state grant program, tax incentives and rebates. Grants are available for both residential and commercial energy-efficient design and are offered at state, county and municipal levels.

State Grants
-
The New Jersey Societal Benefits Charge has established a significant grant program for clean energy design and manufacturing, called the Edison Innovation Clean Energy Manufacturing Fund. Funding of up to $300,000 is available for eligible businesses. The fund also offers substantial loans to promote manufacturing of greener technologies. Other state programs include incentives for buildings designed to incorporate solar power into their architecture.
Homeowner Grants
-
New Jersey's Board of Public Utilities has implemented a program that offers financial incentives to landowners who design and build energy-efficient homes in certain state-designated locations. Participants in the New Jersey Energy Star Program must use the program's approved contractors and follow specific project requirements for inspections in order to maintain their eligibility for incentives. New Jersey's Clean Energy Program also has a number of other state-subsidized green programs for homeowners, which are funded through the Board of Public Utilities.

Municipal Grants
-
Through the Board of Public Utilities, incentives are available to local governments, including municipalities, in the form of grants for energy-efficient design that is also inexpensive. These grants are awarded annually, and interested municipalities must undergo a specific application process to become eligible to receive up to $50,000 in rebates.
Other Grants
-
Cranford Township in New Jersey released the Green Building Density Incentive Program in 2005. Under this program, developers that achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for their green building designs can receive a density bonus. In addition, a number of utility rebates and incentives are available for both businesses and homeowners who make their buildings greener through energy-efficient design and systems upgrades.
