Training for Certified Employee Benefits Specialist
Training to become a certified employee benefits specialist can lead to a fulfilling career in human resources. With the ever-changing landscape of health insurance, pensions, flexible spending accounts and other employee benefits, specialists track, maintain and manage benefits for small and large businesses. Certification programs -- called CEBS for certified employee benefit specialist -- can be found online or at local colleges and business schools. The curriculum is created by the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, which along with the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, awards the CEBS designations.
-
Certified Employee Benefit Specialist
-
The CEBS designation is the highest certification in employee benefits management. Six certification courses are required along with two electives. Courses include: Retirement Plan Management, Employee Benefits, Concepts and Health Care Benefits, Compensation Concepts and Principles, Executive Compensation and Compensation Issues, Retirement Plan Design, Group Benefits Management, Asset Management, Executive Compensation 2 and Health Care Financing.
Retirement Plans Associate
-
The Retirement Plans Associate designation is one of three specialty benefit certifications for those who wish to specialize in certain benefit areas without completing the entire CEBS course requirements. To qualify for the RPA exam, participants take courses in Retirement Plan Design, Retirement Plan Management and Asset Management. Since these courses are included in the CEBS program, you receive credit for them if you choose to take the additional CEBS course work and exam later. As the certification name implies, you'll specialize in designing, managing and implementing employee retirement plans in your company.
-
Compensation Management Specialist
-
For a Compensation Management Specialist designation, participants complete course work in Human Resources & Compensation Management, Compensation Concepts & Principles and Executive Compensation. As with other specialty designations, you can use course credits for CEBS certification at another time. Compensation management specialists handle the management and creation of compensation, bonus and severance packages for employees.
Group Benefits Associate
-
Group Health Plan Design, Group Benefits Management and Health Care Financing courses are required to obtain a Group Benefits Associate designation. Group benefit specialists handle the management, implementation and maintenance of company health, life, disability and other group-related insurance programs.
