What Are the Qualifications to Be a GED Instructor?
GED instructors typically work with older teenagers and adults who want to pass the General Educational Development, or GED, exam. The test consists of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies sections. Each state has its own requirements for GED instructors. In addition, the hiring standards and requirements of GED preparation centers fluctuate with the economy.

Degree
-
In general, GED instructors must have a bachelor's degree to be GED instructors. They may also have to have a teaching license from the state in which they teach. Certain states issue a teaching license for teaching adults; states may require teachers to have a master's degree in adult education. Certificates in teaching adult education are also accepted by certain employers.
Other Education Options
-
Employers may also offer workshops and professional development courses to their adult-education instructors. When the economy is good, employers may relax their education and experience requirements. Adult education is also affected by fluctuations in funding, making more or less jobs available.

Basic Education
-
In addition to teaching the five subjects of the GED exam, teachers also focus on helping students improve their problem-solving, information processing, communication and critical-thinking skills. These skills are necessary to succeed in their careers. Because adult students often have outside obligations, GED instructors must be patient in working with them.
Experience & Other Education
-
Adult-education programs usually prefer to hire GED teachers who have experience teaching adults. Teachers must be able to communicate with and motivate their students. They must understand their students' barriers and limitations and help them overcome them. They should be able to work with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures as well.
