Mother's Day Family Activities

Your mother is always there for you, so be there for her on her special day.

There probably isn't anyone in the world who deserves your thanks more than Mom. Celebrating Mother's Day is a small way of giving back to the woman who took care of you, fed you, stayed up late at night with you and kissed your boo-boos away. Just like she always saw to your needs, see to her needs by choosing activities that she prefers, rather than something that appeals to you.

  1. Outdoor Bash

    • Mother's Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, so the weather is usually warm and sunny. This makes it the perfect day to celebrate outside after a long winter of staying indoors. You can plan a picnic in the park, an outdoor brunch on someone's deck or an evening BBQ if you would like to host the family for a meal.

Surprise Mom by planning all of the meal preparation yourself so all she has to do is show up.

    Indoor Party

    • If your mother prefers temperature-controlled areas to the great outdoors, plan your family get-together inside someone's house by making a private, classy breakfast or brunch. This gives you the advantage of fresh food, such as personalized omelets or toast straight from the oven.

Alternatively, you can make reservations at her favorite restaurant and gather the whole family there.

    Weekend Getaway

    • To spend extra quality time with Mom, extend a simple family activity to an entire weekend together. You can choose to go away to a place none of you have been before, or simply rent a few hotel rooms in a nearby neighborhood. Even a small getaway at a local hotel will provide the feeling of vacation and will allow you to bond together and spend time with each other. Additionally, most hotels include a pool, workout room and game room so you can all relax together there.

    Poems and Songs

    • One family activity that can be very meaningful to Mom is hearing a song or poem written just for her. Whether you go on a picnic or spend time in a restaurant, you can get together with your siblings to create an ode to your mother that tells her just how much she means to you. Sing this song either before you present her with a gift, or use the song as your gift. Include lines specific to her so that she knows you really mean it.
