A hurried breakfast of cold cereal and a glass of juice might technically fill you up to start your day, but it's rarely an enjoyable family time. While you probably don't have an extra hour to fix and enjoy a large family breakfast every day, weekends are perfect for a leisurely start to the day in your kitchen. Spend some family time making a creative morning meal together and you'll enjoy each other as well as the food. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Custom Pancakes

    • Some of the most enjoyable family restaurants specialize in many different flavors of pancakes for the whole family. Recreate this menu with your own family pancake morning. Mix up a batch of batter and allow each family member to pick her own pancake flavors. Put out different fruits, nuts and syrup, and don't forget the cinnamon sugar and whipped cream. Add some bacon, ham or sausage and serve the meal with juice and coffee or cocoa.

    Breakfast Burritos

    • Scramble a large pan of eggs and set it in a dish to keep warm. Heat flour tortillas in the microwave. Chop peppers and set out bowls of grated cheese, sausage crumbles, salsa and sour cream. Allow family members to make their own breakfast burritos with eggs and whatever toppings they enjoy.

    Morning Picnic

    • Make a batch of hard-boiled eggs and remove their shells. Bake some biscuits and slice some ham into biscuit-sized pieces. Cut fresh fruit into a fruit salad, or purchase fresh fruit salad from the grocery store. Pack all the food along with bottles of juice and a thermos of coffee or cocoa and plastic tableware. Find a picnic spot on a sunny summer morning to start your family day off in a tasty way.

    Smoothies

    • For busy mornings without a lot of time, make a batch of custom smoothies. Put frozen fruit, vanilla yogurt and a splash of fruit juice into a blender and whiz it until it's smooth. Pop a batch of crescent rolls or cinnamon rolls into the oven. Serve the rolls and smoothies in disposable cups and napkins and send your family on their way with a different sort of meal one morning.
