Learning Persian can be done online, in schools, one-on-one, or even be self-taught.

There are many ways to learn Persian. If you don't have the time to travel to the Middle East and immerse yourself in the culture and learn the language firsthand, then online tutorials, self-taught courses, or college courses are an easy alternative. However, no matter what type of learner you are, language courses require time, patience and continual practice and often require work and dedication outside the classroom on your own time.

College Courses

College courses are usually the most effective way to learn a language. Teachers have made it their profession to teach Persian to a range of students from beginners to advanced learners. If there is a university nearby where you live, checking the website for courses suited to your needs is a good option. Some colleges that offer courses in Persian include: The University of Texas, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Utah.

DIY Audio books, Recordings and Computer Course Software

There are many books, CDs, MP3 recordings and computer software that you can purchase and learn Persian on your own, at your own pace. Many people like the Do-It-Yourself method of learning because it allows more freedom with regard to time and how quickly you move through lesson plans. Persian/English phrase books are a good starter tool. Also, Rosetta Stone computer software is a popular and reputable program that can be purchased (see Resources). The program is ideal for beginners and goes through lesson plans, including pronunciation, vocabulary, and speaking with scripts.

Online Courses

There are hundreds of online courses you can join and sign up for to learn Persian. The course operates like a virtual classroom, where students can often communicate with one another via discussion boards or chat sites. For example, Linkua is an online language school, that has many language courses to choose from, including Persian (Farsi). Signing up is free, but course materials and books often cost money and teachers are accredited language instructors. Online courses allow you to learn something new in the familiar setting of your own home.

Free Online Learning and Tutorials

Free Online tutorials are widely available over the Internet. Videos posted online, on websites like YouTube, often give basic instruction on Persian. However, many of these free sites are not certified courses and instructors range from professionals to amateur teachers. If you are hoping to obtain a certificate or diploma at the end of your study, it is often best to choose a school or program that is recognized and accredited.
