Jewelry
-
The most widely known use of gems is in jewelry. The diamond is arguably the most valuable and popular gem in existence. Diamonds play a starring role in virtually every type of jewelry imaginable. Diamonds are a must-have for important pieces of jewelry such as an engagement ring. Pearls are also very popular, especially in necklaces. The deep green of the emerald figures prominently in many elaborate pieces. Rubies and sapphires are also popular gems, as are opals, tourmaline and turquoise.
Tools
-
A diamond is one of the hardest substances on the planet. As such, it is a perfect tool for precision cutting, and it is the only thing that can cut another diamond. The diamond is good for grinding tools due to its high wear resistance and long lifespan. The diamond isn't the first gem used in tools, however. Early civilizations used gemstones like jade, which is hard and tough, to fashion into knives, scrapers and axes.

Good Luck Charms
-
Some people use gemstones as a talisman or good luck charm. People may use their birthstones as a lucky charm or simply a gem that appeals to them. Some people believe that certain gems have powers: amber supposedly absorbs negativity and transforms it into positive energy, cat's eye brings happiness and a rose quartz heals heartbreak.
Health
-
Some people take it a step further and use gemstones as a part of holistic medicine. They will use agate, for example, as protection from epilepsy, poisonous stings and bites and even prostate problems. Bloodstone is meant to help problems with the internal organs. Jasper is used to help with the pain of childbirth. Taking some lapis lazuli, a blue semi-precious stone, can supposedly relieve headaches, high blood pressure and depression. Using rhodonite relieves anxiety, improves sexual performance and alleviates dyslexia, while ruby is meant to help deal with eye infections, gout and fevers. The gemstones should be worn at all times and touching the body if possible for best effects.
