Candy Train Craft

Visit the local candy store or the bulk section of your grocery store for supplies.

Creating an exciting craft out of candy is a kid's delight and appropriate for holidays, birthdays or simply a special treat. You can use packaged candy, which can be purchased cheaper in bulk, and your own creativity. Package it up in cellophane, or a clear box, to show off your new snack.

  1. Wheels

    • The wheels on your train are very important as they give a clear idea of what it is, right away. Unwrapped candy, such as flat round hard candies, can be attached to the train using icing. This keeps them edible, but ensures they are securely fastened. Leave the wrappers on if you are worried about sanitation. Small round cookies are another option. As well, foil wrapped chocolate in round shapes can be attached with glue, without damaging the treat inside.

    Body

    • The body of the train can be wrapped packages of candy or chocolate. The other parts of the train will be glued onto the body, so make sure it is sturdy. Wrapped bars of chocolate, hard candies, or gum work well. If you are making a number of trains, or one with more than one car, use a variety of packaging colors and shapes to make them more appealing. At Christmas time, a number of red and green packages are available to make a festive train.

    Decorations and Cars

    • Each train, or car on your train, can be different. Take a look at real train cars for ideas. Stack a number of square gum packages together for a box car, or use a flat package of gum for a flat bed. Long cylindrical wrapped candies could be stacked on a flat car to resemble logs. One train car could be pulling Santa's sleigh. Use mini candy canes as runners, and a suitable candy package for the sleigh. Non-food items can be used as decoration as well, such as ribbons and bows. Glue them to the packaging so that you don't spoil any candy or chocolate treats.

    Variations

    • Rather than using packaged candy, you could always create your own train body out of gingerbread and then use icing to attach all the sweet decorations. Graham crackers are an easy way to mimic gingerbread, and can also be held together with icing. As well, marzipan can be shaped into a train. Use different colors and piece together your engine. Wrap in cello or a clear box.
