Types of Elderly Diets
Elderly men and women need to take care of their health, and that means having a healthy diet plan. Eating healthy foods is an important part of staying active and enjoying life even in the golden years. Aging results in a slower metabolism, less activity and more health problems. While diet alone is not enough for all of the potential problems, it can help minimize health risks and allow for the energy to keep up with grandchildren or enjoyable activities.

High Fiber Diet
-
The body changes in elderly men and women, resulting in digestive problems. To balance out the changes that can result in discomfort, eating foods high in fiber is important. Fiber helps regulate the digestive system and prevent discomfort that can come from high fat foods. Whole grain foods, vegetables and fruits contain high fiber. For those with dentures, baking the vegetables or eating high fiber cereals will prevent problems.
Calcium and Vitamin Rich Diet
-
Elderly men and women need to get higher concentrations of calcium and vitamins B6 and D for a healthy body. A nutrient rich diet is important. Calcium and vitamins B6 and D are especially important for anyone who is 51 years old or older. The body needs more nutrients as the body ages.

Special Diets
-
Elderly individuals might face a wide range of physical problems that require special dietary needs. For example, a man or woman with potential heart problems would need to follow a low fat, low cholesterol diet with restrictions on specific foods. Other diets might include soft and easily swallowed foods, diabetic diets, diets for anemia or diets for specific health problems. Special diets are usually worked out with a doctor to meet health needs and nutrition.
Exercise with Diet
-
It is important for elderly men and women to stay active for good health. While it might be tempting to skip exercise due to aching joints, muscle pains or health problems, it is important to stay physically fit for good health in old age. There are exercise options which are easy on the body and can allow physical fitness improvement. For example, go for a swim or walk instead of running. Combined with a healthy diet, exercise can improve elderly health.
