Some companies and employers will implement an award program to recognize the hardworking employees of the business as a method of motivating and developing the employees. While some employers have a set list of criteria in place when evaluating employees, others do not know where to begin the evaluation process. Start by identifying a list of criteria for your employee of the month program and find methods that motivate your employees to perform better and work harder.

  1. Consider Figures

    • If your employees are primarily sales people and are responsible for selling products or services on behalf of your company, you could consider sales figures as part of the employee of the month criteria. While they should not be the only thing that determines whether an employee should be considered for an award, sales figures do reveal that an employee is working hard and generating money for your business. You can also consider commission payments or overall products sold as part of the evaluation. For example, one employee may sell 100 cheaper products, while one employee may sell one large product that equals the value of the 100 smaller products.

    Consider Personality

    • You can also evaluate your employees in terms of overall personality, friendliness and team involvement. Some employees may find that the sales market is a competitive market, even for employees working in the same area. As an employer, you should encourage teamwork for your employees, so make this part of the award criteria. Elements to consider can include helping out employees in need, teaching new techniques, offering perspectives and opinions during group meetings or being approachable for other employees.

    Give Proper Recognition

    • Once you have selected your employee for the monthly award, make sure that the employee is recognized in a proper manner. This is not only to award the immediate month's employee for the hard work, but also to motivate employees who want the recognition to keep striving for a chance at next month's award. Recognition can include a monetary bonus, gift cards, recognition in the company's newsletter or a plaque for the hard work.

    Motivate your Workers

    • Continue to motivate your workers by offering new employee-of-the-month prizes or awards each month. While some would prefer a gift card to a grocery store as an award, others might prefer a new technological gadget or device. If the award is the same each month, some employees may not work toward getting that monthly recognition. Change up the criteria and recognition rewards on a monthly basis to keep your employees motivated and engaged in the employee of the month program.
