Jobs of the Maid of Honor
It is a tremendous honor to be asked to be the maid of honor in a friend or family member's wedding. With this honor, though, comes a tremendous amount of responsibility; there will be certain jobs that you will be expected to do as well. Make sure that you understand your role as the maid of honor fully and can commit the time necessary before you accept.

Party Host
-
One of the major responsibilities of the maid of honor is planning the bachelorette party and hosting a bridal shower, although these duties can be shared with the bridesmaids. You will be responsible for sharing the cost of these events with the bridesmaids and anyone else who wants to help host them. Be sure to coordinate the dates of these parties with the bride so that they don't conflict with any other events or appointments. Typically, a bridal shower is held a couple of months before the wedding while the bachelorette party is held a week or two before the wedding. Be sure to attend all pre-wedding events and parties, including the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. During the wedding reception, you may be asked to serve as the 'hostess,' making you responsible for addressing any issues that arise to ensure that bride and groom enjoy their party.
Assistant
-
One of your roles is to be an assistant to the bride. You will need to be available to help her with any planning that she requests, in addition to helping her perform wedding-related activities, including addressing invitations and making the wedding favors, if necessary. Your job is to try to make her's a little easier. On the day of the wedding, help her to relax and remain calm. Additionally, you need to ensure that all of the bridesmaids attend their dress fittings and are present and on time for wedding events, and help coordinate any transportation issues. In essence, you are in charge of the bridesmaids.

Wedding Toast
-
One of the most stressful parts of being a maid of honor is making the wedding toast at the reception. Be sure to introduce yourself and explain your relationship with the bride. Many people, especially distant relatives, will not know who you are and how you fit with the bride. Relate special stories and memories the two of you have together. Address the groom, as well, and give the couple your best wishes for a happy life together.
Additional Jobs
-
As maid of honor, you will be responsible for holding and giving the bride the groom's ring during the ceremony. During the ceremony, you will also hold the bride's bouquet for her and hand it to her after the rings have been exchanged. After the ceremony, you will serve as a witness on the marriage license. Sign it along with the best man, bride, groom and officiant. You may also be asked by the bride to file it at the courthouse.
