Bocce is a variant of lawn bowling. Originally developed in Italy during the 19th century, bocce was initially popular among Italian communities but is now played throughout the US. Bocce is played on a long asphalt court with metal or plastic balls. Players take turns throwing balls in an attempt to place their ball closest to a smaller ball, called a pallino. There are many bocce courts throughout California, and several courts in southern California are located in facilities that also serve alcohol.
