Lowell is a city just northeast of Boston, Massachusetts, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The textile industry boomed in Lowell in the 19th century as the city moved to the forefront of the industrial revolution. Lowell is also home to Middlesex Community College and the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Technical schools in Lowell are few, though communities in the Greater Lowell area of Tyngsboro and Tewksbury offer technical school educations, which are primarily acquired for those wishing to learn a trade, such as cosmetology, massage therapy or computer science.

The Lowell campus of the Empire Beauty School has offered educations in cosmetology since 2000, which includes technical training as well as teaching the business side of beauty care. Though Empire Beauty Schools are located all over the country and offer training in nail technology, aesthetics and makeup artistry, the primary focus at the Lowell campus is cosmetology. Students will be taught basic, contemporary and advanced techniques in cosmetology and how to utilize the latest trends in hair cutting, coloring and design for men, women and children. Students will work with real clients in a professional salon-based setting and also learn about skin care, manicures and pedicures, along with cosmetology business development and customer relations. Empire claims you will complete the program in about a year and be on your way to a job in the cosmetology industry. As of January 2011, financial aid is available.

Lincoln Tech, which began helping War War II veterans find careers in 1946 and has since evolved into a training ground for careers as diversified as law to the culinary arts, has campuses all over the United States. The Lowell campus offers degree and diploma programs in criminal justice, medical assisting and administration, networking, pharmaceuticals and network communication and information systems--programs include hands-on training from industry-experienced instructors, along with health sciences, business and information technology. Lincoln Tech also offers online education programs. As of January 2011, financial aid for all programs is available.

Greater Lowell Technical High School

Though primarily a high school, the Greater Lowell Technical High School, situated in Tyngsboro, also offers adult education in various technical fields. The school is the largest technical school in the United States and provides a full academic program and 24 technical programs to students from the communities of Lowell, Dracut, Tyngsboro and Dunstable. Day and evening classes are offered for continuing education as well as day and evening programs in practical nursing. Adult classes further include welding, small-engine repair, plumbing and baking. Though course credits are not offered with these classes, prerequisites include a high school diploma or GED.
Salter School

The Salter School is a private technical school designed for those wanting training for professional careers in business, health care and computers. Campuses are located in Fall River, Malden and New Bedford, with the Tewksbury campus being part of greater Lowell. This campus offers career training for health-claims specialists, computer networking management and massage therapy. The Tewksbury Salter School further offers hands-on training by experts in the field, along with career days, career counseling and lifetime placement services--which, according to the Salter School website, are part of the commitment to education the school has offered for the past 60 years (as of January 2011).
