Spend time outdoors as a family during the fall.

Fall weather is a gorgeous time of year with cool temperatures and long days in many parts of the country. Fall is a great time to bring the entire family outdoors for fun activities. On rainy or cold days, curling up inside together can make for a fun family night. Many fall activities are family friendly and appropriate for all ages.

  1. Nature Walks

    • Fall is the perfect time to take the family on hikes or nature walks. In many parts of the country, the leaves change colors in the fall, and the weather isn't too hot or cold. If you live near a state or national park, visit the park. Make sure to bring a carrier for small children that might tire easily. Even your local neighborhood can be a good place to take the family for a walk. Point out the changing leaves in your own backyard. Most towns have a few parks with some trails. Fall weather can change quickly, so make sure to wear clothing in layers.

    Game and Movie Night

    • On cold or rainy fall nights, stay inside as a family. Turn off the television and all electronics and have a family game night. Play board and card games as a family, or play other games like "Charades" or "I Spy" if your children are young. Make sure to pick games that all family members can play. If a child is too young to play, let the young child play with an adult as a team. Rent age-appropriate movies or pick favorites from your movie collection for a family movie night. Cook up snacks, like popcorn or sweets, to eat while watching the movie.

    Pumpkin Patch or Apple Orchard

    • Picking out a pumpkin is an activity for the entire family. Many pumpkin patches have activities besides the pumpkins. In many of the patches, a hay ride takes you to the pumpkin patch where you can pick your own pumpkin. Some families let every family member pick a pumpkin, while others only pick one for the entire family. Other activities at the pumpkin patch may include corn mazes and areas to pose to take pictures. Apple orchards are another family-friendly fall destination. These orchards let you pick your own apples or buy some pre-packaged apples.

    Picnic

    • Take the family to a local park and have a picnic dinner. Pack sandwiches, vegetables with dip and chips or anything that's easy to take along and spread out a blanket on the ground or find a picnic table. Some parks have playgrounds for the children and trails for a hike. The changing leaves will be a beautiful back drop and if the leaves have started to fall, you can play in them as a family by making leaf piles and jumping in them.
