The pyramids are an essential part of studying Ancient Egypt.

Ancient Egypt reaches back in time to around 3,000 BC and was divided into kingdoms, or what ancient Egyptians called dynasties. Kings or Pharaohs were given power to rule over the land and make all decisions regarding the inhabitants. The Nile River played an important part in Egypt's history and was its lifeline. Droughts as well as floods also controlled the country's economic resources. Egyptians relied on a vast religious system to survive. There are many available courses to both the novice and expert in studying Ancient Egypt.

  1. How to Study Ancient Egypt

    • Whether you intend to obtain a degree in Egyptology or are simply fascinated with the study of Ancient Egypt, many options are available to meet your needs. Egyptologists research, teach and often conduct archaeological excavations regarding Ancient Egypt. A bachelor's degree is a must, emphasizing Egyptian culture, language, art and religious beliefs. Serious Egyptologists normally pursue a master's degree and even a doctoral degree in some cases. For the casual learner, taking college or online courses prove to be a valuable resource to further their inquisitive minds.

    Kingdom Periods

    • Ancient Egypt time periods are divided into kingdoms or dynasty periods including Early Dynastic Period, Old Kingdom, Late Dynastic Period and Greek-Roman Period. Courses available through the Yale Egyptological Institute in Egypt explore dynasties concentrating on art, architecture and religion for each period. The University of Exeter in the United Kingdom offers introductory courses on the different kingdom periods for beginning students new to Egyptology. Any serious study of Ancient Egypt should begin with reviewing the different periods.

    Ancient Egyptian Builders

    • Ancient Egyptians were talented builders leaving their mark through the many pyramids still standing in the 21st century. Many pyramids were formed to house the remains of the ancient Pharaohs. Studying the shape, materials, designers and workers used to build the pyramids provides an additional glimpse into the lives of the Ancient Egyptians. Taking a field trip to the ancient ruins in Egypt and seeing the structures firsthand enhances any study involving the pyramids.

    Importance of Religion

    • The Ancient Egyptian's religious beliefs were passed down from generation to generation. The belief that Pharaoh was a god, in addition to being king, enabled the Pharaohs to garner incredible power over the people. Besides Pharaoh being looked upon as a god, the Egyptians also believed in many other gods and goddesses. The process of mummification was used to preserve the deceased Pharaohs' remains so their spirit could survive after death. Courses teaching about these beliefs gives further insight into this culture.
