Music production is an exciting field in the recording industry that can be a rewarding career. The job of a music producer is to secure studio time for music artists, ensure that a project stays within budget, oversee and hire background performers and help artists choose songs to record, among other tasks. Students pursuing an education in music production have plenty of schools to choose from that offer music production programs.

  1. New York University

    • New York University, located in what is known as the capital of the music industry, is located on the border of Greenwich Village and SoHo districts. The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development offers bachelor's degree programs in music technology, music business and music education. NYU's Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music offers graduating students a Bachelor of Arts in Recorded Music, which aids in careers such as sound engineers, music producers and music production supervisors. Students applying to the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music program must submit an online creative portfolio for artistic review.

    Georgia State University

    • Georgia State University is a four-year public institution located in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1913, the school offers 55 degree programs with 250 fields of study. The School of Music offers degrees in music education, music management, music recording technology and composition, among other music-related degrees. The music technology degree is a bachelor of music, focusing on recording and music production. It prepares students for work in artistic, technical or producer/director capabilities in the recording industry. An audition is required for admission into the programs.

    University of Miami

    • The University of Miami is a four-year private institution located in Coral Gables, Florida, and was founded in 1925. With more than 15,000 students from around the world, the University of Miami offers a diverse learning experience and student life. The school is comprised of 12 schools and colleges for both undergraduate and graduate students. The school offers programs including music composition, music education, music business and entertainment industries, music, music engineering technology, music performance, music therapy and musical theater. The music engineering technology program prepares students for music recording, production and reproduction. An audition is required for entrance into the music programs.

    Virginia Tech

    • Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech, is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. Offering 65 bachelor's degree programs and 145 master's and doctoral degree programs from nine colleges and graduate schools, Virginia Tech also has several music programs available to students. Music programs offered include music composition, music education, music performance and music technology. The music technology program includes techniques and technologies used for artistic expression, and students can expect to study the basics of acoustics, recording and mixed-media production. There is an audition required for entrance into the program.
