Children should know their home phone number for emergency situations.

At ages 4 or 5, children should be encouraged to learn their home address and phone number in case of an emergency, especially if there is an accident or if they get separated from their parents. Activities may be introduced in the classroom and at home to focus on memorization of the child's address and phone number.

  1. Write a Letter to Mom or Dad

    • Practice writing a letter to mom, dad or another relative. Kids should put the letter in an envelope and address the envelope with the home address so they know how to write it, recognize it and say it.

    Homemade Place Mat

    • Have children decorate a piece of paper with a picture of their family on it. Have them write down their address and telephone number on it. At snack time, have students sit at the place mat and say part of their address and phone number. Keep adding pieces of their address and phone number until they know it by memory.

    Practice Call

    • In emergency situations, children should know how to call for help. Students should pretend to dial 9-1-1 or their emergency phone number and say who needs help, and give their home address.

    Identification on the Phone

    • Children should be able to recognize the number on the telephone and be able to point them out on the telephone. Have students practice dialing their home phone number while saying the numbers aloud. This can also be done so kids can memorize their parent's cell phone or work numbers.
