Lawyers hire paralegals to handle legal work.

Founded in 1878, the American Bar Association (ABA) has offices in Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC. The independent agency accredits not only law schools but also schools that offer paralegal programs. The Standing Committee on Paralegals requires prospective schools looking for paralegal program accreditation to follow a very thorough application process before approving the institution. After approval, schools have to re-certify every seven years.
