  1. Toy Shopping

    • Your child's safety begins at the store where you purchase the toy. There are several things to remember when toy-shopping for your child. Toys that are made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable. Painted toys should be lead-free, and art materials should state non-toxic. Choose toys that are easy to wash and clean.

    Appropriate Toys for Appropriate Ages

    • You need to pay attention to the type of toys you give your children according to age. Infants, toddlers and preschoolers need toys that are large so they won't choke, are sturdy and secure with items that cannot break off or come loose, and avoid toys with strings or long cords to prevent a strangulation hazard. Small items can present choking hazards and should not be played with. Grade-schoolers should not be given toy guns that look real, and safety gear should be worn for toys such as bicycles, scooters and skateboards.

    Maintaining Toys

    • You should perform a routine check on your child's toys to inspect for breaks and other potential hazards. A damaged or dangerous toy needs to be thrown away or repaired immediately. Watch for outdoor toys that contain rust or weak parts. Check stuffed toys to be sure the parts are stitched on securely. You should wash infant and toddler toys daily to prevent bacteria from growing.

    Storing Toys

    • Toys should be stored properly to prevent trips and falls along with wear and tear. Toys that are used outdoors should be stored indoors after play so rain or dew cannot rust or damage the items. Keep your toy room tidy and store items on low shelves where the children can safely reach them. Heavy toys should be placed on the floor.
