GED Requirements in Houston, Texas
The GED Testing Service is a program of the American Council on Education. A GED, or General Educational Development, certificate is equivalent to a high school diploma for students who didn't finish high school. Colleges, the United States military and most employers accept the GED certificate just as they would a high school diploma.

Texas Education Agency

The Texas Education Agency oversees all elementary and secondary education in Texas. The agency's GED Unit works with the American Council on Education (ACE) to coordinate GED preparation and testing in the state. Individual school districts do not set their own policies.The Texas GED title is the Certificate of High School Equivalency.

A student earns the GED certificate by successfully completing a series of tests in five subject areas: reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. ACE requires a minimum total score of 2,250 points for the five tests and a minimum of 410 points for each individual test. Students may retake individual tests if they do not meet the minimum score.
Texas GED students must meet five requirements for testing. Each student must have a government-issued photo identification card, be at least 18 years old, be a Texas resident, not be enrolled in high school and not have graduated high school.
Seventeen-year-olds must meet all of the above requirements and have permission from a parent or guardian.
Sixteen-year-olds must meet the above and be enrolled in a Job Corps training program or be under the supervision of a state agency or court order.

Houston Indpendent School District

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is one of 26 districts in Harris County, Texas. The district serves more than 200,000 students. The district does not offer GED preparation or testing services. Houston students who wish to obtain a GED can contact one of nine local community sites for information. Houston Community College, North Harris College, San Jacinto College, Seaborn Challenge Corps, Texas Southern University and the University of Houston provide GED services.

According to the American Council on Education, more than 17 million students in the United States have obtained their GED certificates since 1943. GED certificates were available in all 50 U.S. states by 1974. Ninety-eight percent of colleges and universities accept the GED as the equivalent of a high school diploma.
