SMART Board Activities for Fifth Grade

In classrooms across the United States, chalk boards are being replaced with SMART boards---interactive computer teaching devices. These SMART boards have a variety of capabilities and teachers are using them more and more in their classrooms. For fifth grade students, lessons on just about every subject---including language arts, social studies, math and science---can be taught on the SMART board.

  1. Noun Dunk

    • For fifth-grade language arts, students are often learning the grammatical differences between a common noun and a proper noun. "Noun Dunk" on the Harcourt School website is an interactive basketball game designed to help students identify the difference between a common and proper noun. The character on the screen holds up a noun and the students must decide if it is a common noun, proper noun or not a noun at all.

    Baseball Multiplication Game

    • The Everyday Mathematics Games site offers a Baseball Multiplication Game that allows the students to play an interactive baseball game on the SMART board. Students must multiply the numbers on the dice and enter the answer into the game in order to score hits and runs in the game. The game lasts three innings before a winner is decided. This is an enjoyable way for students to practice quick, mental multiplication skills.

    The American Revolution Time Line

    • In the fifth grade, students are often beginning to learn U.S. history in detail. This SMART board activity is a game that tests students' knowledge on the time line of the Revolutionary War. The game, produced by the website Mr. Nussbaum, allows students to play in either one-player or two-player mode. In addition, they can choose easy or hard levels. They will match up an historical event with the correct date on the time line. Teachers can use this in the classroom as a way to study before taking a test on the Revolutionary War.

    Label an Insect

    • One science lesson that can be taught on a SMART board in a fifth grade class is labeling insects. The British Council's Learn English Kids website has an interactive SMART board lesson that allows students to view the diagram of an insect and then click and drag the names of parts to the appropriate spaces. This allows students to correlate not only the different names of insect parts but their correct locations as well.
