The post-graduate year is the year a student spends between high school graduation and starting college. Students may choose to participate in a post-graduate program to further their education and prepare themselves for the work that lies ahead in their college career. These programs are often small in student size and focus on giving the students an academic edge over other students who will be their classmates once they begin college.

By attending a post-graduate boarding school, students are placed away from home, as they frequently would be when attending college, and follow a similar academic structure.

The application process for post graduate boarding schools follow similar criteria as the admissions process employed by colleges. Test scores from standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT, as well as academic and behavioral track records, are taken into consideration by the boarding schools before they admit students into their program.
