Church Nursery Themes
The design of your church nursery is an important part of creating a sense of community. An inviting room will set parents at ease and make children feel welcome, enabling you to support a growing congregation. As always, make safety a priority. If installing used furniture, check all parts for wear and tear that could result in injury. Never use paints or coatings that are harmful to children. Make sure the nursery is child-proofed before each use: cover outlets, raise cords, and lock all windows.

All Creatures Great and Small
-
"All Creatures Great and Small" is a quote from a popular hymnal. Decorate the room with photos and drawings of animals. Incorporate the theme into the rest of the room by using animal prints. Avoid using large quantities of faux fur to decorate the walls or floor as this material is difficult to sanitize and may prove a choking hazard for toddlers and young children.
Shepherd and His Sheep
-
Comfort your flock with a soothing pastoral theme. This design scheme is excellent for rooms that are small as it maximizes natural lighting. Paint the walls and ceiling in pastel colors. Opt for a multicolor, high-traffic carpet in a neutral tone such as gray or brown. Frame drawings and pictures of sheep or paint directly on the wall. Create suitable murals of a shepherd tending his flock, animals grazing, or sheep jumping a fence.

Bible Stories
-
Use a memorable Bible story to inspire your room design. Tales such as Jonah and the great fish, Noah's Ark, and David and Goliath are common themes in church nurseries. Consider dividing the room into sections and painting a mural on each wall that depicts an important part of the story. As with many religious tales, the recognizable climax of these stories may be perceived as dark or violent, so focus themed murals on events after the resolution. For example, do not show Jonah being eaten by a fish, but rather as he is sheltered from the desert sun by the Lord's plant.
Community Collage
-
Allow parents and other members of the congregation to contribute decorations and furniture for the church nursery. Hang photographs of churchgoers at religious events. Use letter stamps to post favorite quotes and names. Be sure to minimize visual clutter, refinish all donated furniture to match, use identical frames for all wall hangings, and leave blank space between displays. Involve older children and teens by allowing them to complete the necessary refinishing and framing.
