Easter ministries for children focus on the story of Jesus' resurrection.

Easter Sunday is one of the busiest days of the year for church, according to a Gallup poll, because many people who don't regularly attend church will attend on Easter Sunday. Many churches develop Easter Sunday ministry materials to engage children of all ages and to teach them the story of Jesus' resurrection, which is the reason Easter is celebrated. There are many approaches and methods to conducting children's Easter ministries that are effective for all ages and learning styles.

  1. Puppets

    • For younger children, puppets can be used as a way to connect their interest and imagination while telling a story that can be difficult to understand. Because children are most interested in fun and play, their attention can be captured by using colorful puppets. Even though the Easter story is a human-based one, human-looking puppets are not necessarily a "must have" as children will add their imagination to whatever they see. The Easter story can be sad, but using puppets in the presentation of the story will help children be able to celebrate the triumph.

    Skits or Plays

    • Using Easter-themed materials to organize a skit or play is a way to enlist the help of children and to get them involved in the Easter story in a new way. Not all Easter skits re-enact the death, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, but rather tell the story from the perspective of a kid "just like them." Children's ministry leaders may want to have kids sit and watch a skit or have them participate by acting out the role of a character in the story to help it come alive for them.

    Crafts

    • Although it doesn't seem like the first choice for Easter ministry, crafts are a great element to incorporate into children's Easter ministry because they allow kids to use their imaginations and to put what they've learned about the Easter story into something they can take with them and look at. There are many online stores as well as brick-and-mortar shops that sell Easter-themed crafts (see Resources). Combining a craft with an Easter presentation, such as a story, skit or puppet show, will give children an opportunity to show what they have learned and to have something that helps them remember the Easter story.

    Easter Music

    • Easter music has a long history and because music is so broad, there is a wide range of styles that can fit any type of approach or background -- from hymns to contemporary rock 'n' roll. Teaching kids songs that tell the Easter story can change the learning environment by encouraging participation. Music is also a way to teach the foundations of the Easter story in a way that children can easily pick up and remember. Adding kid-friendly elements, such as hand instruments or hand motions, can enhance the experience. Music can be used on its own or in combination with other approaches.
