Fifth grade math leads to the study of algebra in middle school.

Smart Boards are being used extensively in the elementary grades for instruction in classrooms. A Smart Board is "an interactive, electronic whiteboard" that the teacher manipulates by use of an electronic pen. They are well-suited for lessons that include the entire class where the teacher needs to visually present her instruction to her students. They take the place of chalkboards in the classroom, and dry erase boards. There is no chalk dust or dry erase markers to deal with, and Smart Boards can be written on and erased very easily. There are games that the whole class can play with the teacher's direction that instruct students while engaging them in an interactive and fun way.

  1. Negative Numbers

    • The object of the game is to put negative and positive numbers in order from highest to lowest. This is an excellent game for fifth grade students as they will start working with positive and negative numbers as they move into pre-algebra and beginning algebra in middle school. The game has three levels of difficulty so it can be adjusted for students as they progress in their knowledge of positive and negative numbers.

    Estimate

    • This math exercise can be used with decimals which fifth grade students will be introduced to in class. There is an interactive pointer finger that the teacher will manipulate to point to the number line, and the class will need to estimate the number. The teacher will then reveal the answer by pointing to the number line with her interactive pen on the Smart Board. Students will gain knowledge of whole numbers, odd numbers, and decimal points. The teacher can divide the class into teams and award points to the team who scores the highest number of points for correct answers.

    Area and Perimeter

    • Students enjoy watching the lesson as it is presented with animated characters. This particular lesson discusses what area and perimeter are and how to find the area and perimeter of different shapes. The students will participate in the lesson by answering questions during intervals in the video. The teacher can call students up to the front of the class to fill in the answers using the electronic pen on the Smart Board. This lesson breaks math concepts up into easy-to-understand language that appeals to children, while at the same time presenting it in an engaging manner.

    Math Arcade

    • Students move through a maze that looks like a board game after they answer each type of math problem that the teacher presents to the class. The math problems can vary from greater than and lesser than numbers, positive and negative numbers, fractions, and word problems. The teacher can divide the class into two sections and award points to each section based on correct answers. The teacher may want to reward the section of the class who gains the most points with a math game or math puzzle.
