The city was named after California redwood trees.

Redwood City is located 25 miles south of San Francisco and about 27 miles north of San Jose. One of many "charter cities" in the state, Redwood City is not governed by the laws of California, but rather by its own charter. The city is accessible by bus or train and has a host of attractions to choose from.

  1. San Mateo County History Museum

    • Located on Broadway Street in Redwood City, the San Mateo County History Museum is housed within a 1910 courthouse. You can view exhibits on historic ships, the history of the city and local entrepreneurs. The staff conducts workshops for children and adults as well as outreach programs for community groups and schools. You can also rent the museum for cocktail parties, conferences and wedding receptions. As of 2011, the museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    Malibu Castle Golf and Games

    • Malibu Castle Golf and Games offers miniature golf, batting cages, go-karts and a game room. You can enjoy the bumper boats but must be at least 18 years old to carry a passenger. Batting cages require advanced reservations. The facility hosts graduation parties and youth groups and also offers group rates. As of 2011, the facility is open everyday, as early as 10:00 a.m. during the weekend. You can end your trip with a Grand Prix race in either a single or double-seated race car.

    Marine Science Institute

    • Located on Discovery Parkway, Redwood City and founded in 1970 by Bob Rutherford, the Marine Science Institute seeks to increase children's awareness of the environment. The facility offers summer marine camps, at the end of which campers have a closing ceremony to display what they have learned. The Marine Science Institute offers birthday party packages, school programs and family programs. You can also become a volunteer at the aquarium or conduct research as an intern.

Emerald Hills Lodge and Golf Course

    • The Emerald Hills Lodge and Golf Course spans 30 acres of Emerald Hills, Redwood City. Complete with tennis courts, a heated pool, an exercise room and a nine-hole golf course, the facility also hosts wedding receptions and corporate events for up to 300 persons.
