Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, utilizes chest compressions to promote circulation in people in cardiac arrest. Studies have shown that effective CPR provided immediately following cardiac arrest can triple chances of survival. Although thousands of people are trained each year in CPR, there are still many who are unaware of proper procedures. Becoming a CPR instructor will train you to be able to teach others CPR. Several organizations offer classes to certify CPR instructors.

  1. American Heart Association

    • The goal of the American Heart Association is to increase the chance of survival in cases of cardiac arrest and stroke by elevating public awareness and community leadership. This is accomplished by providing easy-to-locate CPR classes through CPR instructors living within communities. The American Heart Association offers Instructor Training courses throughout the year. The AHA requires instructor applicants to complete the Core Instructor Course as well as a discipline-specific instructor course in Basic Life Support (BLS), Heartsaver, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ALCS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to obtain certification. Visit the American Heart Association website to locate the training center in your area.

    Red Cross

    • Red Cross CPR training meets OSHA and other professional standards for workplace safety. The Red Cross offers many courses across the country for CPR training as well as continuing education courses. To become a Red Cross instructor, visit the Red Cross website to locate the chapter closest to you.

    EMS Safety Services

    • EMS Safety Services offers courses designed to teach individuals to become instructors, no matter what their current expertise level. The courses combine hands-on instruction with at-home study to make sure you are a confident and competent instructor. EMS Safety Services also provides students with most of the equipment needed to begin instructing.

    Citizen Safety Institute

    • The Citizen Safety Institute offers a DVD-based CPR Instructor training course. This is advantageous due to the fact that you can learn at your own pace in the comfort of your own home. When you sign up through the institute's website, you will be sent the CPR instructor package, which includes the following items: Adult CPR DVD (English or Spanish), three-ring binder, complete CPR Program Instructional Guide scripts, student workbook and 10 "cards of completion." This kit contains everything you need to complete the course and begin instructing CPR on your own.
