What to Put on a Job Application for "Tell Me Something Unique About Yourself"?

The dreaded "Tell me something about yourself" just got worse. Now the employer wants you to tell her something "unique" about yourself. On top of everything else, you have to write your answer on a job application, which means you have to choose the best wording to make yourself stand out on paper.

  1. Writing

    • Even if writing is not your strong point, writing down what makes you unique and the best candidate for the job on paper gives you the opportunity to choose your words carefully, rearrange them and erase and start over again if you want to. You have time with a job application to make your answer perfect. You don't have this luxury in an interview. Also in the written process, you do not have to deal with potential nervousness that can cause you to make mistakes in a spoken answer. Capitalize on this time and the chance to say what you want by considering your answer carefully and rewriting it a couple of times to get it just right.

    Life History

    • This question does not want you to detail for the employer where you were born, how many siblings you have, or how you really enjoy eating chocolate cake. Your job is to tell the employer why you are the best candidate for the job using a unique example from your life to demonstrate your point.

    Example

    • Pull a story from your life that demonstrates excellence in at least one of the main qualifications and responsibilities of the job. Read the job description to find which skills and qualifications are most important for the job. Then find a funny or unusual story from your life that shows how you fulfill those skills and qualifications. For example, if the job requires the person who fills it to be able to coordinate large projects, you might write down on the application about the time you got several local businesses to work together to put on a benefit concert and dinner for a friend of yours. Use examples of accomplishments of which you are proud and emphasize your ability to do the job well.

    Short

    • Keep your answer short and to the point on the job application to this question. A few sentences is enough to help explain how you are the best candidate for the position and tell the employer something he could not glean from your cover letter and resume or the rest of the application. Connect who you are to the job by telling the employer what makes you unique as it relates to the job description.
