Easy Elementary Art Lessons
School should be a place for students to grow, be creative and explore all the possibilities within the given curriculum. Taking the time to place emphasis on the arts is crucial to a child's development both inside and outside of the classroom. There are some suggestions for easy art lessons through elementary activities.
-
Space
-
Have your students draw pictures of stars, planets and everything else found in outer space. Bring in examples of different space shuttles and rockets for the children to reference and recreate by themselves. Encourage them to add their own personal touches, such as astronauts, aliens, or a nation's flag.
Self-Portrait
-
Elementary school students -- no matter what the age -- can experience a valuable lesson in art and life when challenged to draw a self-portrait. Show the children paintings of other artists' self-portraits and ask questions about style and color to get them involved. If the students struggle with self-portraits, have them pair off and attempt to draw their partners instead.
-
Zoo
-
A day at the zoo can spark a young child's fascination in animals and provide them with lifelong memories. Ask each student to draw his favorite animal or zoo scene, and see if the other students can guess what animal the drawing shows. Compile all the drawings and display a "Zoo in the Classroom" featuring every child's favorite animal.
Food
-
What is your favorite food? Draw a pizza, hot dog or macaroni and cheese. If your students are in a slightly older age group, have them make a collage of their favorite foods instead. You can provide them with magazine clippings or keep it simple by using colored pencils only. This is an art lesson that even the youngest ones can accomplish.
