Checklist When Expecting a Baby
A woman has many decisions to make while pregnant. Correlating these decisions with each stage of pregnancy keeps the list manageable and timely. A woman wastes time packing a hospital bag before the end of her pregnancy. Conversely, there may be some issues with coverage if you wait until two weeks before your due date to talk to your insurance company. It's also helpful to see what items your partner can complete.

First Trimester
-
Find an obstetrician early to ensure you'll have adequate prenatal care. Once you have a doctor, start making your appointments for follow-up visits and any prenatal testing you'll have done. Research your insurance coverage for things like out-of-pocket expense. Start buying maternity clothes, even though you may not need them for a while. Create a budget and start saving for the baby now while you have time. Also, with the help of your doctor, start a prenatal exercise routine.
Second Trimester
-
Babies need so many things. During the second trimester, start deciding what your work plans will be after the baby arrives. If you do go back to work, determine your schedule and what will you do for childcare. Order a cord blood banking kit, or at least research if you want to do this. Register for a birthing class. Make plans for a baby shower and register for gifts. Work on a birth plan, including who will attend the birth.
-
Third Trimester
-
Now is the time to interview pediatricians. Buy any items you still need for the baby. Wash baby clothes and set up the nursery. Send out thank-you notes for shower gifts. Install the car seat and have it inspected. Inform your employer of your last day of work before taking maternity leave. Cook and freeze meals for after the baby arrives. Pack a bag to take to the hospital.
Postpartum
-
It's time to take care of you and your baby. Send out birth announcements. Make an appointment with the pediatrician, usually one or two weeks after birth. Get help from a lactation consultant if there are any breastfeeding issues. Schedule an appointment with your obstetrician. Ask your doctor when you can resume exercising. Decide when or if you will go back to work. Have a trial run with your child care provider.
