Food Lion Grants for Schools

The company's community outreach programs include charitable donations, sponsorships and collaborations with the Easter Seals and American Red Cross. Among these programs, Food Lion offers grants for school academic programs, as well as a handful of school-oriented community outreach initiatives.

Food Lion Charitable Foundation
-
Food Lion's Charitable Foundation funds projects directly related to the academic education of children. Eligible programs include primary and secondary education environments. The Food Lion Charitable Foundation has a preference for estabished and successfu programs over start-up educational programs. These grants cater to public charities, private schools and public schools, not individuals. Additionally, Charitable Foundation grants help provide meals to the hungry in non-academic environments.
Grant Amounts
-
According to the Food Lion Charitable Foundation, most Food Lion grants for schools range from $1,000 to $3,000 as of 2011. The company, however, does not set limits for grant amounts. Applicants can request any amount in their application, provided they specifically detail how the funds will be used. In some cases, the foundation awards partial grants to support specific program areas. The foundation also offers multi-year grants, usually over the course of three to five years. Grants come in the form of cash; Food Lion does not offer food products or gift cards to educational programs.

Application Process
-
The Food Lion Charitable Foundation offers a downloadable application packet at its official website. Applications include a general information form, though applying parties must include a project proposal and additional information necessary to outline the project to the company's Foundation Board. Applicants must submit their applications no later than two weeks prior to the Foundation Board's review request; the grant application form details specific deadlines. Interested parties may submit one grant request per 12 month period.
Other School Programs
-
Food Lion offers structured educational programs, including the Roaring to Read instructional kit and Math Night, which invites elementary students into Food Lion stores to apply math skills in real-world environments. The company also offers free school group tours that educate students about supermarket operations. A company-sponsored food safety program provides teachers with free lesson plans, activities and handouts for teaching food safety skills. Food Lion also participates in the General Mills Box Tops for Education program, in which consumers clip box tops from participating products and send them to schools, who in turn send them to the General Mills company in exchange for money.
