Preparing her for her first day of school will be more fun with a survival kit.

Survival kits are whimsical and economical gifts to show that you care for your students; if you have a creative streak, you can come up with your own ideas for what to include in the kit, or you can use ideas found online. A survival kit for the first day of school will open up the lines of communication between students and teachers and helps to calm the first-day jitters.

  1. Use a Cool Container or Baggie

    • To save money for a large group of survival kits, use plastic bags (clear or in the same color so there are no fights), and tie them with cloth ribbon for a streamlined look. If you are creating a survival kit for just one or two people, you can go a bit higher in price by using decorative boxes filled with tissue paper. If you use a box, make sure to wrap it for that extra surprising touch.

Include a Note to Decode Your Sentiments

    • Include a note, which tells students why there's an eraser and a chocolate kiss in the bag at the same time; explain in poetic or regular terms what each item is for. For example, "the chocolate kiss is to comfort you if you are feeling sad," or "the sticker is to remind you that we all stick together and help each other out." Make sure to type up your note using a pretty font and stock paper for a professional, polished look.

Include Candy For a Sweet Touch

    • Chocolate kisses can stand for the love you will give throughout the year. Lifesavers can mean you will be there to hold her hand if she needs it. A mini box of Nerds can remind her that "it is sweet to be a nerd!" The possibilities are endless because there are so many types of candies to choose from. Take a trip to your nearest grocery store or pharmacy and make a list of all the candies you can possibly include in the survival kit. Make up a simple phrase or tell what each candy could possibly stand for; then, choose your favorites from the list.

    Small School Supplies

    • Small school supplies like pens, pencils, notepads and erasers (to remember that everybody makes mistakes) are useful items to add. Include colored paper clips (to remember that several hands are better than one), rulers (to measure how much you grow each year), crayons (to draw a picture of what you want to be when you grow up) and scented markers (to draw pictures of all the smiles in class).
