Volcano Projects With Detergent for School
The science fair volcano is a classic school project and has been recreated by many children over the years. Due to how it is constructed, it is also a good project to do as a family. It requires very few items, most of which can be normally found in the home, and can be made in very little time at all and still look impressive.
-
Making the Volcano
-
Mix six cups of flour, two cups of salt, four tablespoons of oil and two cups of water in a bowl to create a solid dough and mold this around a plastic bottle on a baking tray. If you want you can tape the bottle to the baking tray to make it more secure, but this is not necessary. If the dough does not want to stick to the bottle leave it to harden for a while or add some more water. Do not cover up the hole at the top of the bottle.
Preparing for the Eruption
-
Combine warm water and red food coloring and pour it into the bottle using the funnel to avoid any spillages. Add about six drops of detergent to the mix when it is in the bottle. This will create the lava. If this is for a school project do this part when you get to the venue.

The Eruption
-
When you want the volcano to go off add two tablespoons of baking soda and then slowly add the vinegar and stand back.
The Reaction
-
When the baking soda and the vinegar react they create carbon dioxide gas which increases the pressure inside the water bottle. This in turn forces the water and detergent to froth (thanks to the detergent) and forces it out of the bottle creating the lava effect. The food coloring is there to make the lava look more realistic.
