Butterfly Art Lessons
Butterflies are found all over the world and come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. These can be duplicated in projects, using paper, colored pencils, paints, pipe cleaners and many other items found around the house. The art can be simple or complex, depending on the age of the artist.

Pipe Cleaner and Origami Paper Butterflies
-
This project calls for two pieces of printed 6=inch origami paper, two 12-inch pipe cleaners of any color, scissors and glue. Place one piece of paper evenly on top of the other and fold them in half. Starting at the fold, draw half a heart. Cut out the hearts and then lay them on the desk with the patterned side facing the desk. Overlap the pointed ends about 2 inches and glue the hearts together. These are the wings. Twist the pipe cleaners together beginning at one end and ending about 3 inches from the other end of the cleaners. Curl the ends of each remaining end like antennae. Lay some glue on the center of the wings and place the pipe cleaner down, apply a little pressure and let it dry.
Faux Stain Glass Paintings
-
Use tracing paper, a pencil, a black felt tip pen and colored pencils. Using clip art and a pencil, trace one or more butterflies onto the paper. The artist can add plants and flowers if she likes to make the image more intricate, or just work with one butterfly. When the drawing is done, trace over the pencil line with the black felt tip pen taking care not to smudge the ink. Use the colored pencils to paint the images, leaving the background untouched. When held up to light or taped to a window, the picture looks like a stained-glass window.

Felt and Spoon Butterfly
-
Use wooden craft spoons painted with magic markers, felt squares, squiggly eyes, pipe cleaners, scissors and glue to create colorful felt butterflies. Use clip art to create outlines of butterfly wings. Place the outlines on the felt and cut them out. Glue the wings onto the wooden spoons and allow them to dry. Cut two two-inch lengths of of pipe cleaner and curl them. Glue the straight ends of the pipe cleaners to the head of the spoon and let it dry. Turn the butterfly over so that the body of the spoon is on top and glue the eyes on the wide part of the wood. The butterfly is complete.
Butterfly Mural
-
Use a length of brown craft paper to create a classroom mural, but instead of painting the paper, have students draw and paint or color butterflies and flowered plants. Glue the artwork onto the paper and hang it up in the classroom.
