Diaper Cake Decorating Ideas

Create a unique diaper cake for a baby shower.

Diaper cakes are useful, creative gifts that any expectant mother will love receiving. Made with disposable diapers, these cakes can be customized to fit any theme, regardless of the sex of the baby. Sports, princess, animal or cartoon character themed diaper cakes can be designed easily by purchasing the supplies that can be used in a nursery once the cake has been disassembled.

Sports Theme

If the parents expecting a new bundle of joy are avid sports fans, create a diaper cake customized to their favorite team or sport. Assemble to cake with the diapers and add sports-themed accessories around the layers of the cake. Rattles or tethers in the shape of a sports ball can be attached to the cake. Small towels with the sports team embroidered onto them can be wrapped around the layers of the cake. Infant size jerseys or team outfit can be attached to the cake along with a small pair or athletic shoes. A team hat or mini helmet can be placed on top of the cake.

Bug Theme

Butterflies, fireflies or ladybugs can be the center for decorating a diaper cake for a mom who plans to decorate the nursery in such a theme. Assemble the diapers to create the cake and focus on one type of bug and color through out the cake. Measure and cut pieces of lace or ribbon in the selected color to wrap around the different layers of the cake. Use ribbon and attach pacifiers, rattles, baby washcloths and lotions in the same color bottle as the cake to the diaper cake. Attach decorative bugs around the cake using ribbon.

Musical Theme

Create a musical-themed diaper cake that will provide a variety of musical instruments for the baby to play with as they grow. Assemble the diaper cake and purchase a musical instrument set from the toy department along which should include maracca's, tambourine, mini guitar or drumsticks. Find a few lullaby or children's favorite songs CD. Use thick ribbon and wrap a piece around each layer of the cake. Attach each toy instrument around the cake using the ribbon. Place a drum on top of the cake. Slide the CDs onto the cake under the ribbon. Attach musical instrument notes to the ribbon throughout the cake.

Princess Theme

Little girl's are often viewed as princesses to some parents. Decorate a diaper cake fit for a princess. Assemble the cake and wrap the layers of diapers in satin material or small satin blankets. Wrap a pink or purple ribbon around each layer of the cake to hold items onto the cake. Place a princess crown or tiara on top of the cake. Place a princess fairy wand along with purple or pink baby toys like rattles and teethers. Attach a pair of booties or shoes to the cake fit for a princess. Include a cute outfit or dress for the baby that matches the colors of the cake.
