When using a three-color combination, one color is usually dominant.

While many couples chose to go with a two-color combination theme for weddings, a three-color theme introduces more color and variety into the wedding. Using three colors can further a theme and make it more apparent. Using three colors also makes the wedding unique and memorable. Try not to go over three colors or your wedding will look jumbled and you'll be overwhelmed by the choices for decor.

  1. Types

    • Three-color schemes look best when they are one of two types: adjacent or triadic. For the adjacent scheme, pick three colors in the color wheel. The color wheel is a visual representation of the colors from red to green and all hues in between. For an adjacent wedding, a bride might pick green, yellow and yellow-orange. For a triadic wedding, pick three colors that an equal distance apart on the color wheel, like yellow, blue and red. The triadic type isn't as popular as using adjacent colors. Most brides pick one dominant color that is used more in decorations and secondary colors used as accents.

    Changing Leaves

    • Fall colors blend so well together that a three-color scheme is easy to pull off for an Autumn wedding. Fall is known for vibrant colors like the changing of the leaves. Think about the colors regularly found in the fall like rich browns, reds and oranges and take cue from the changing of the leaves. Fall wedding colors are generally bold and rich. According to designer Sarah Prye, color combinations for fall weddings include: chocolate, red and orange; and red, rust and golden yellow. Pick one of the colors to be the dominant color and use the other two as accents. Consider incorporating the colors by adding fall leaves into the decor as well.

    Bold Hues

    • Many people look to the leaves and terrain for inspiration, but other brides like to do the unexpected. You could choose to go with colors that aren't traditional fall colors, like purples and blues. It's still a good idea to pick at least one dominant rich and bold color, like a darker blue or purple. Some color combinations in that theme include: sapphire, wine and eggplant; navy blue, silver and periwinkle; eggplant, olive and dark olive; eggplant, deep blue and merlot; mocha, chocolate and eggplant; and chocolate, mocha and ivory.

    Formal and Romantic

    • If you're planning a more formal wedding, chose one of these color combinations that also add a romantic tone to your wedding. Formal weddings use classic colors that are appropriate for any time of the year, including fall. These color combinations, according to Sarah Prye, include: black, white and silver; black, red and gold; white, gold and ivory; chocolate, black and ivory; black, red and white; white, silver and periwinkle; white, pink and black; white, black and ivory. Again, pick a dominant color and use the other colors as accents.
