Students learn important clinical research skills to apply to the pharmaceutical field.

Students in the health care field seek training so they can give quality patient care and services. By taking clinical pharmaceutical science, students develop interpersonal relationships and acquire communication and research skills needed for the practice of clinical pharmacy. Universities offer core courses that are an interdisciplinary plan of study of clinical research, clinical pharmacology, genetics, epidemiology and drug development.

  1. University of Tennessee Health Science Center

    • The department of clinical pharmacy at the University of Tennessee offers a health care and educational environment, where students gain health literacy and counseling skills geared toward the pharmaceutical practice. Student must take courses on basic clinical and communication skills, experiential learning (rotations) and introductory pharmacy practice experience. The university also requires students to have 10 months of advanced pharmacy practice experience; one month in advanced institutional, advanced community, acute pharmacotherapy and ambulatory care; four months of direct patient care; and two months of elective rotations.

    University of Iowa College of Pharmacy

    • The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy has coursework in clinical pharmaceutical science that can lead to a doctorate. The curriculum involves 72 hours of program courses needed to satisfy graduate college requirements. The program consists of 32 credits of courses, 12 hours of electives and 28 credit hours of elected study as either research credits or additional coursework.

    University of California Department of Clinical Pharmacy

    • Students can take a pharmacy curriculum based on the study and practice of pharmaceutical therapeutics from the University of California Department of Clinical Pharmacy. In a Pharm. D. program, students participate in four-years of full-time clinical care study that specializes in advanced pharmaceutical practice experience. The first and second years consist of a core curriculum of basic biology, chemical and physical sciences in the areas of pharmacy study. The third year of study involves a transitional year for additional professional and scientific courses. Students who are in their fourth year of study will work in patient care and will also take required and elective coursework.

    University of South Florida College of Pharmacy

    • Students enroll full time at the University of South Florida College of Pharmacy Curriculum to learn about the clinical pharmacy field. The students will take most courses in the classroom, yet they may also learn via online study. Post-graduate education and training give students the opportunity to pursue their areas of interest with courses combined with elective study. The University of South Florida offers several semester-long courses, including a summer, spring and fall course with 48 credit hours of advanced pharmacy practice experiences and two credit hours of class forum content.
