The Cons of a Jogger Stroller

The most important thing about a stroller is that your baby is safe and comfortable.

For moms who love to exercise, but want to keep their babies close, a jogging stroller can be a dream come true. Jogging strollers push more easily than a standard four-wheel stroller and are better equipped to handle curves and bumps in the road. However, if you plan on using your jogging stroller as your baby's everyday mode of transportation as well, you'll find times when it doesn't compare to a regular stroller.

  1. Watch Out for Curbs

    • All jogging strollers follow the three-wheel design, with one wheel in the front and two in the back. This makes for great pushing while running, but can be slightly dangerous when it comes to steps or curbs. If you try to go down a curb with the front of the stroller first, the stroller will be forced to balance on one wheel until you bump the back of the stroller down. This can cause the stroller to tip to one side, which is very dangerous if your baby is not secured properly or if the stroller is too heavy for you to restore balance.

To prevent this, tip the stroller backward so the front wheel is off the ground and bump the back wheels of the stroller down first. Once the stroller is safely off the curb, lower the front wheel to the ground. If you forget to do this, you could end up with your stroller on its side.

    Heavy Build

    • Most jogging strollers are made with a sturdy frame and a powerful feel so they can easily handle bumps in the road without shaking up you or your baby. A jogging stroller is built strong to provide a smooth ride, but they are extremely heavy when compared to a non-jogging stroller.

The bulky frame and padded seat that provide that smooth ride while out for a jog all add up to extra pounds you must lift when you want to put it in your car.

Not Made for Infant Car Seats

    • Most jogging strollers can accommodate an infant car seat, but they are not built for that purpose. While a travel system or car seat frame is made to have the car seat attached, a jogging stroller requires an extra piece, which increases the price. You will probably have to take it out and put it back on every time you fold or unfold the stroller. Additionally, because the piece is not built into the stroller, it is not as sturdy as a stroller built to accommodate the car seat.

    Higher Price

    • In general a jogging stroller costs than a standard stroller. A jogging stroller has air-filled tires as opposed to plastic ones, a sturdier frame, a more cushioned seat and often, a more attractive design, so you are getting more for your money. For parents on a budget, however, a standard stroller will do the job of getting you around town for a considerably lower price.
