Ease your students -- and yourself -- into summer.

At the end of the school year, there's an indescribable electricity in the air. All signs point to summer as final tests are over, term projects have been completed and yearbooks have been issued. The last few days of the academic year should be fun for middle school teachers as well as students. Set down the books and reward your class with ideas that will make the last day of school an even more memorable day.

  1. Plan a Talent Show

    • Talent shows can bring the entire student body together. In addition to celebrating the end of the year, such a show also offers a chance for students to showcase their talent and expertise. If the weather permits, arrange chairs and tables so the show can be performed outside. Have refreshments on hand to make the event even more of a treat.

    Take a Field Trip

    • Students will be buzzing about their end-of-the-year trip.

Depending on your school's location, field trips can be done inexpensively. Even a walking trip to your local park or community pool will give your students a chance to breathe easy, socialize and get in the mood for summer. If you want to make the trip educational, inquire with your local museum or nature reserve about rates -- many will be happy to host a year-end event at little or no cost.

    Show a Movie (or Two)

    • Sometimes weather keeps you indoors -- the perfect occasion for a movie screening.

If summer thunderstorms or excessive heat have put a damper on your day, keep the kids inside and show a couple of movies. Try showing films with a balance of educational and entertaining content, such as "The Mummy" or "Castaway." If your room size permits it, invite neighboring classes to join. Order pizza or have your school's cafeteria cater your classroom to turn the screening into a real event.

    Arrange a Field Day

    • Best reserved for the very last day of school, field days allow students to socialize, say goodbye to departing friends or teachers and fill the "Autographs" page of their yearbooks. Set up a few gaming tables (cards, puzzles, board games) and bring out the sports equipment to keep students active. If it's hot out, root beer floats or flavored shaved ice make for a cool treat.
