Find a tutoring job to earn extra money.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, elementary and secondary school teachers earn an annual mean income of $54,620. For some teachers, this wage does not pay their bills or they want extra spending money. Since teachers don't have school in the evenings, weekends or summer, they can take a second job.

  1. Tutor

    • Continue working in the educational field by becoming a tutor in your off hours. You already have the training, knowledge and experience for this type of second job. Work after school and on weekends helping children learn English, math science or social studies. If you specialize in a certain area such as literature or chemistry, you can even tutor college kids. Students also needs tutors to prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. Work for a tutoring company or freelance. You probably know plenty of kids who could use some special attention outside of the classroom. As a freelance tutor, you can set your own hours and wages.

    Freelance Writer

    • Take a second job as a freelance writer to earn extra cash. As a teacher, you already have a good grasp of the English language and know how to communicate. Write articles for newspapers, magazines, blogs or other online publications. Begin by submitting articles to your local newspaper or looking for job postings online. Once you build your credibility, you'll get more assignments. Freelance writing allows you to write about subjects that you know well and are interested in. Work as much or as little as you want.

    Babysitter

    • If you became a teacher, you must already enjoy being around children. You know how to keep them entertained and how to discipline them when they misbehave. Use this knowledge and become a babysitter. Parents who want a night alone or work the third shift need someone to watch their children in the evenings. Once you put the kids to bed, you can grade papers, make lesson plans or complete any other school-related work. You can also set your own wages.

    Photographer

    • If you know your way around a camera as many art teachers do, become a freelance photographer. Take pictures for your local newspaper or become an events photographer and photograph people's weddings, parties and graduations. If you have an extra work space at home that you can set up as a studio, become a portrait photographer. They take pictures of children, engaged couples and families. Work your own hours and set your own prices.
