What Are the National Catholic Newspapers & Magazines?
American Catholics have choices when subscribing to faith-based newspapers and magazines. Dozens of diocesan newspapers -- including many that have been around for more than a century -- keep parishioners current on local events. Diocesan papers are typically sent to registered Catholics by their home parish, while national newspapers require readers to subscribe for themselves.

National Catholic Register
-
The National Catholic Register, founded in 1927 and acquired by Eternal Word Television Network in January 2011, publishes 26 issues each year, with an online edition updated regularly. Articles cover breaking national news; blogs discuss social media, relationships and the interaction of other faiths and the Church. Other sections offer music, book and movie reviews. Subscription options include print, print and online, and e-reader editions.
National Catholic Reporter
-
The National Catholic Reporter calls itself an alternative paper. Established in 1964 for Catholics dealing with moral questions and issues in contemporary society, the paper's mission statement implies a liberal stance and acknowledges individual differences. Catch up on international news, spirituality and politics; an August 2010 article explored the ordination of women to the priesthood. The paper's website carries less information than the print edition, which is published bi-weekly.

St. Anthony Messenger
-
St. Anthony Messenger combines feature articles with humor and fiction. Subscribe to the print edition to get the most out of St. Anthony Messenger, but visit the website to take advantage of web tools that include seasonal e-greetings, information on the day's honored saint and up-to-date news from the Vatican. St. Anthony is the finder of lost objects; check out the search feature, where he'll help you find topics of interest.
America, the National Catholic Weekly
-
America is the only weekly Catholic magazine in the United States. A publication by the Jesuit Order, America has been in business since 1909, bringing the Church to the American people. News and features are presented from a Catholic perspective; the ideals of justice are a common theme. The monthly Catholic Book Club has been selecting books for readers since 1928. Choose either the print or web edition and get access to America's archives.
