First Day of School Activities for the 3rd Grade

When school reopens in the fall, children often are nervous, no matter which grade they are entering. However, some fun activities can help ease their transition to a successive class. These fun activities on the first day of school can make them comfortable with the new teachers and classmates and the pressure of new and difficult syllabus. The first day is full of new beginnings, learning activities and friends.

  1. Formal Introduction to Students

    • Formal introduction is an activity often unnoticed. Though almost every student knows his or her teacher's name, a formal introduction is usually practiced. It enables the students to know more about their teachers. It also gives the students an opportunity to interact with fellow students and get to know them on a personal note. The formal introduction is followed by a question and answer period where students can gain more clarity, not only about their teachers but also the school as a whole.

Seminar with Last Year's Third Graders

    • Arrange a small seminar for last year's third grade students with the new third graders. Allow them to share their activities and experiences of last year with each other. Participate in the seminar with the children and be friendly with them. Ask the new third graders to question their seniors. This activity increases the children's familiarity with the new class and their seniors.

    Name Tag Collage

    • Ask the students to create attractive name tags and stick them in front of their desks. Ask the students to use colored paper and to decorate the name tag with pictures of the student's favorite activities. You'll learn a lot about your new students simply be looking at the name tags.

    Fun Fact Story

    • Ask the new third graders to write a fact story about their previous class experiences and a few lines to describe themselves. Ask students to read aloud what they have written. This is a fun-filled activity that takes out the hesitation and shyness within each student.
