Children's Activities About Heaven

Activities help children understand more about Heaven.

Children who have lost loved ones may not have a concrete concept of what Heaven is, who goes to Heaven, how people go to Heaven and why there is a Heaven at all. Activities help children understand the concept of Heaven.

  1. Read Books

    • Read books about Heaven to children. "God Gave Us Heaven" by Lisa Tawn Bergren uses colorful illustrations and polar bears to talk about Heaven. "Your Home in Heaven" by Donna Wyland gives substance to the concept of Heaven through words and illustrations. The truth and sensitivity of this book is especially useful for a terminally ill child or for children who've recently lost a loved one. "Heaven for Kids" by Randy Alcorn is a resource for use with tween-age children.

    Draw Pictures

    • After talking about the Biblical concept of Heaven, have the children draw their idea of what Heaven is like on a sheet of plain cardstock. Provide crayons, markers, pencils, rulers, glue and glitter. Some students may draw pictures of loved ones who've died. If the students are old enough, have them punch holes around the edges of their picture and thread yarn around their picture, tying it off at the top to hang up. If students are not old enough to punch the holes, have the cardstock sheets punched ahead of time. Have extra sheets for students who may wish to start over. Also provide a variety of yarn colors.

    Sing Songs

    • Teach the children songs about Heaven that they can learn and sing on their own. Classic Christian songs about Heaven include "In the Sweet By and By," "I'll Fly Away" and "When We All Get to Heaven." The songs provide the opportunity to talk about imagery used in the songs such as pilgrims, mansions, streets of gold and pearly gates. A good way to start the subject of Heaven with songs is to start with the easily memorized and fun song "Heaven is a Wonderful Place."

    Check Bible References

    • Have older children look up references to Heaven in their Bibles and write down what Heaven is like. References can include Hebrews 13:14; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Revelation 14: 13; Revelation 21:1, 4; Revelation 22-23, 25, 27 and I Thessalonians 4:17, among other passages. Students can check the concordance in their Bibles for more verses. You can also have concordances available for the students to use in looking up verses on Heaven. Have the students talk about what they learned about Heaven, what Heaven is and what the Christian religion teaches is the pathway to Heaven.
