Requirements for a Master's Degree in English
Some students enroll in a master's degree program in English language for teaching English literature in school as well as post-secondary level. Other students enroll for careers in publishing and writing. Besides the core studies of literature, linguistics and criticism, master's programs also cover courses related to analytical abilities and presentation of concepts and ideas. The requirements for getting enrolled in a master's program vary from institute to institute, but there are a few general prerequisites that apply to most colleges.
-
Academic Qualification
-
To enroll in a master's program in English, the student must have completed a three- or four-year undergraduate program in English and baccalaureate degree with an acceptable grade point average.
General Tests
-
Most schools require the student to have achieved a satisfactory GRE or GMAT score to be eligible for applying for a master's degree. Additionally, he is also required to demonstrate his academic potential by showing strong writing samples.
-
Comprehensive Examination
-
The student must have passed a comprehensive examination in either English or American literature (varies from college to college). In some universities, the comprehensive exam is to be taken during the master's program, while others require passing this exam during the bachelor's program.
Foundation Year
-
Many universities require the prospective students to complete a foundation program, which is either a six-month or one-year program. This is a prerequisite for students who do not have a background of the program. The courses offered in the foundation program are typically designed to establish a base for the student, for instance, Marymount University Virginia offers two courses (six credits) in the foundation program: Building and Textual Interpretation and The Transformation of Literary Study.
